- description
Robert Simpson's Symphony No 3 is dedicated to his friend and fellow composer Havergal Brian. A work of dramatic contrasts and irrepressible energy, Simpson described the second of its two movements as “a huge composed accelerando”. The London Symphony Orchestra is heard here under legendary Russian conductor Jascha Horenstein.
Coupled with the Symphony, the Clarinet Quintet recalls Simpson's lifelong study and admiration of Beethoven.
Originally released on Unicorn-Kanchana Records. Reissued with funding from Arts Council England.
Reviews:
"This CD picks up part of [Simpson's] early legacy and presents it in all its pioneering freshness... This is a valuable document of the world's earliest awakening to Simpson's distinctive and completely genuine voice."
